les Ombres , direction : Sylvain Sartre & Margaux Blanchard
Guided by the enthusiasm, the rigorous standards, and the varied experience of a group of artists of different generations, the ensemble Les Ombres, directed jointly by Sylvain Sartre and Margaux Blanchard, stands out in today’s Baroque landscape.
It is the diversity of its encounters that enables Les Ombres to pursue all its projects with the same passion, whether in chamber music in trio or quartet formations with an emphasis on Bach, Couperin, and Telemann, or in larger scale staged productions involving a chamber orchestra, soloists, singers, actors, and dancers in neglected operatic works. Seeking to take the same care it devotes to the musical element of its projects, and aiming to reach wider audiences than specialist music lovers alone, the ensemble has chosen to develop the aspect of staging in its concerts in order to create productions with a unique atmosphere, featuring acting, lighting e ects, and video projections, all created wholly to serve the music.
Nevertheless, the work of Les Ombres indisputably continues in the musical tradition of the pioneers of the Baroque Revival. True to so-called ‘historically informed performance practice’, the ensemble cannot divorce its interpretations from the ndings of musicological research. Its musicians, trained at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis by Marc Hantaï, Paolo Pandolfo, Jesper Christensen, and Andrea Marcon, set out to rediscover the forgotten masterpieces of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, striving to give them a new lease of life without ever betraying the style of the works. ey take a special interest in the dissemination of French music throughout Baroque Europe.
Les Ombres has forged bonds of delity with a team of artists who are among the most talented of their generation. Such soloists as Mathias Vidal, Alain Buet, Isabelle Druet, Mélodie Ruvio, Chantal Santon, and Jean-François Lombard join the group in numerous projects given in prestigious opera houses (Montpellier, Saint-Étienne, Lyon) and at international festivals (Ambronay, Freunde Alter Musik Basel, York, Utrecht, Tokyo, among others). Its recordings, released on Ambronay Éditions and, since 2014, on Mirare, have met with critical acclaim and received such distinctions as ffff Télérama, Choc de Classica, Qobuzissime, Coup de Coeur du Jardin des Critiques of France Musique, and Supersonic Pizzicato.
Les Ombres is in residence at the Opéra Orchestre National de Montpellier.
The ensemble receives support from the DRAC, the Région Languedoc-Roussillon, and the Fondation Orange. The ensemble Les Ombres is "artist in residence" at the Fondation Singer-Polignac and is a member of FEVIS and of PROFEDIM.
